Margaretha Geertruida MacLeod (néeZelle, Dutch:[mɑrɣaːˈreːtaːɣeːrˈtrœydaːˈzɛlə]; 7 August 15 October ), better known by the level name Mata Hari (MAH-tə HAR-ee, Dutch:[ˈmaːtaːˈɦaːri]; Land for 'sun', lit.'eye of the day'), was a Dutch exotic dancer and courtesan who was convicted of being a spy backing Germany during World War I.
She was executed by firing squad in France.[1]
