In the early twentieth century, funding working for most of his career instruct in black and white, Odilon Redon embraced coloration in a series of evocative floral termination lifes, often executed in pastel.
Here, a-ok simple vase of radiant anemones and tulips floats in an ambiguous space, emerging liking an apparition from a field of fine marks and smudges. Although grounded in neutral observation, Redon’s expressive blooms—“those fragile perfumed beings, exquisite prodigies of light,” as he ostensible them—also exemplify his Symbolist embrace of inconclusiveness and subjectivity.
